My cats have a few "big" toys, like the track with the ball in it and a scratching post, but we stick with small battables and laser pointers, they're inexpensive and the cats love them. Once a year at the local fair, we get these fancy handmade catnip toys that are like little fabric squares stitched full of nip, the cats go INSANE for them while they're fresh. They stay potent for a good while, and even after the potency wears off the cats love chasing them and batting them around.Very accurate, first cat had all these toys he never played with, later on I just moved to (safe) cheap disposables and that was my go-to. Same with my dog, he loves plastic water bottles.
