Disaster Active shooter alert issued for areas in and around Tumbler Ridge, B.C. - Residents asked to shelter in place; suspect described as "woman" in a dress with brown hair

An active shooter alert has been issued for a large area in and around Tumbler Ridge in B.C.'s northeast.

The alert was issued Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. PT by RCMP, and it covers Tumbler Ridge, Chetwynd, Dawson Creek and areas surrounding them.

Police say those in the Tumbler Ridge area should stay indoors and shelter in place, and not leave their homes.

The suspect in the case has been described as a woman in a dress with brown hair.

Anyone who sees the suspect has been asked not to approach them and to call 911.

Stateside, they actually have started charging parents. I know of one shooting in Michigan where mom and dad went to prison, and one in Georgia where dad was charged. It's insane that the shootings haven't been prosecuted this way from the get-go. Mom is already dead, so if the guns are hers, she's already faced the consequences. However, if the guns belonged to the stepfather, then he needs to face charges (assuming Canada has lock-up-your-guns laws, which I'd figure they would given all the gun control measures they have on the books). Additionally, firearms were removed from the home, I believe when Jesse tried to burn the house down, but they were returned. If authorities advised the parents to lock up the firearms after that, they were unfortunately ignored. Some are asking why the guns were returned in the first place, and that's more likely to be a policy issue than a matter of police negligence, but someone who actually lives in the province would be better qualified to speak on that.

Regardless of what the policies actually are, I personally think that the parents of shooters are, in most cases, criminally negligent. And this negligence isn't just in the form of failure to prevent guns from falling into the hands of children, though that's certainly a factor. Children are not born homicidal maniacs. As a lot of criminal profilers say, "Genetics loads the gun, personality and psychology aim it, and your experiences pull the trigger."
