If I'm not mistaken I never read a lot of comics but there was a story where a guy found out that it was Bruce Wayne and the bad guys actually threatened him, and he had to keep the secret because most of the bad guys already knew but they also knew that without Bruce having that one little piece of humanity to hang onto that he would become a killer and destroy all of them.

This seems to be a point of confusion for people. There was no protest. Protest is when you use force of numbers to petition the government for some legal remedy. This was felony obstruction of an active law enforcement operation. So imagine that there's a bank robbery in progress, and someone intentionally puts themself in between the SWAT team and the bank doors. That's not a protest. That's them aiding criminals in evading arrest. That person is now an accomplice in a crime.
