CS Lewis had a great chapter on something, I think it was pride, and he was making this point that there’s a very ugly trait in people that we often root for people we dislike to be worse so we can jerk ourselves off even more. But in doing so you’ve basically decided for yourself that you like evil more than good. You want the world to be more evil just so it can magnify you. That’s why, or at least part of why, pride is the most dangerous sin.

As I understand it Lewis’ sense of it was that it’d be righteous to wish an evildoer hangs for his crimes (as is just) and evil to wish he goes to Hell for it. The opposite of what comes naturally to us today, who wish our enemies would go to Hell but feel virtuous for forgiving them worldly crimes.
