I think a large reason China hasn't made a move on Taiwan is a lack of force projection to contest or destroy the Panama canal. The majority of Americans live east of the Mississippi river, the majority of the Army bases, and units are based east of the Mississippi river. Any response to Chinese aggression in the far east is going to be dependent on the ability of the navy to rapidly move not only their own ships, but army and marine units from the eastern seaboard to places like Guam, South Korea, and Taiwan. A China friendly, (and armed) nation in the Caribbean sea could do wonders at delaying an American response. Either forcing us to deal with them first, or by taking out the canal, and forcing the navy to sail around South America, or through the Atlantic and Indian Oceans to reach the Pacific.

You cannot move entire combat divisions by plane in a resource efficient manner. A C-17 can carry a single Abrams tank. An armored division can have upwards of 150+ such tanks. That's not to mention all the supplies, and support elements. And once those units are on the west coast they still have to board ships to reach the far east in any size worth sending.
