The US population in 2000 was 281 million. In 2026, the US population is 340 million. That's 59 million additional people, or 2.3 million more people every year. America only builds 1.3 million homes a year on average. Meaning the total new housing supply is 32.5 million. Meaning America is currently 26.5 million homes short of 1 home per person. Of course, not everyone lives alone, couples, children, sometimes extended family, but the numbers are clear. We've literally imported more people every year than we build houses. Let's also not forget all the housing destroyed in fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, falling trees, motor vehicle accidents, etc... that take housing off the market either permanently or temporarily. Which makes the issue more acute.

Now apply this to every other western nation, and you see why we have a housing crisis.
