The success of the SMO (for lack of a better term) in Venezuela depends on if the remaining Venezuelan military decides to play ball or not. If we get a somewhat good deal for both us and the remaining Chavists, then the Venezuelan opposition can come back and take over the day to day governance of the country from there and we have another US-aligned government in our backyard to counteract Chinese influence and show the world that we can still get shit done.
Whatever happens, Trump must not let an insurgency or civil war develop in Venezuela because we pissed off the military and/or civilians too much or whatever the fuck, as that will exacerbate the migrant crisis, require actual boots on the ground to try to contain and thus more U.S servicemen blood being spilled, and serve as another foreign policy embarrassment for the U.S. The hard part with Iraq wasn’t deposing Saddam, it was the aftermath with us mass-firing the Ba’athist bureaucracy without placating them like we did with the Nazis and Imperial Japanese post-WWII and trying to inject Western values and globohomo to a country that is fundamentally incompatible with such ideas. If we aren’t too hasty or harsh with the governmental transition in Venezuela, things will go swimmingly.
