Knocking down a narco commie goverment is great. But I get the feeling the long term plan is to make very favorable deals on resources with the new government. One of Trump's promises is to make America industrial again and having cheap oil imported from a nearby country isn't a bad idea if you want to save the US's deposits for a rainy day.

Anything Maduro says in negotiations can't really be trusted. Even when he has come to Trump for some type of deal, he tried to negotiate the removal of sanctions for over 100 Venezuelan government officials, many accused by the U.S. of human rights abuses, drug trafficking or corruption. He also detained Americans within the last 24 hours. These are not the actions of a man who is willing to go all the way to save his position at the top of a government.
