Given how fervently partners tend to defend their abusers, I suspect it was women who either couldn’t even keep an abusive man around or we’re so detached from society that their idea of abuse was “William won’t let me drive the studebaker after I wrecked the model a he bought me” that really made up the drive for prohibition.
