So, a couple things. First, the type of reactor that Chernobyl used (the RBMK) is not the one being made these days, but rather the PWR. The most important reason is that the former used graphite while the latter uses water; graphite has a positive void coefficient, which means that a loss of power can result in a power slowly building up in the reaction, while water has a negative void coefficient which means they are able to self-stabilise. In addition to this, modern reactions are built with multiple redundant containment methods while the Chernobyl reactor basically next basically nothing.
