I think a new requirement for EBT should be cooking classes. Majority of people on EBT have no idea how to cook a meal and rely on expensive processed garbage. $20 of ingredients can make a large dish that can last for several days and is 100% more nutritious. Getting rid of Home EC was a mistake too because it taught people how to 'adult' and taught them basic home skills. Those skills are not getting taught or passed down at all anymore and its crippling peoples ability to run a house and raise a family.
Part of the reason why home ec and similar lifestyle classes have disappeared has to do with the high school-to-college pipeline and competition between American students and international students (i.e. Indians and Chinese). Instead of using high school to develop citizens, the focus has been set at a high administrative level on using high school to get students into college. From that viewpoint, why waste an hour each day on cooking skills when you could fit one more "advanced" class in your students' schedules? And when you throw in sweatshop-style Chink and Jeet schooling (and massive cheating they do), there's increased pressure for American high schoolers to take heavier "academic" course loads to keep pace.
The high school class I use most in my everyday life is, unironically, the yoga and fitness class I took as a senior to get my PE credits. That's because doing certain stretches and poses is a good and healthy habit that makes me feel better and helps with certain joint/muscle issues. I never used anything from calculus or physics once I got into college, but I had to take them just to be competitive for college admissions. If I could, I would have taken a cooking, auto repair, gardening, etc. class instead of one of those. And I would have gotten far more use out of it.
