i am over 20 days annual leave and the higher ups told the director to tell me i need to take some days off so i guess i will try book a friday off

You could take a week this month, next month, and December and still have a week + whatever you accrue between now and then. You could take two weeks in a row. Or a nice 12 days - start on a Thursday and you get 12 days off in a row for the price of only 8 leave days, plus a 3-day week before and a 4-day week after. Bookend or include a holiday in there and you've got nearly 2 solid weeks off for only 8 leave days. All of which you said was impossible and all of which you've said you desperately need. Now it's been handed to you on a platter. No being brave, asking for anything, concern about denial. Lucky you!
