One of the primary things communists did in the 20th century was brutalize people living off the land and the countryside because they were obsessed with economic and industrial growth. The Maoists murdered Taoist priests, and destroyed cultural artifacts from the Song Dynasty. They have a deep hatred for anything traditional for the sake of being traditional. They don't have any appreciation for why and how cultures develop over time and why.
