I can't say I ever paid much attention to Charlie Kirk. He was the guy whose face was too small for his head and had a fucky tooth:gum ratio. To the extent I am at all aware of what he's had to say, it was idealistic milquetoast pablum.

Kirk was, if I could find anything to say about him that approaches praise, a voice for The Men Who Wanted to Be Left Alone. He kept them mollified. Someone who kept the things they considered important part of The Conversation, even if they didn't necessarily agree with him.

I don't know about professional assassin, but I'm guessing at least former military. One and a half football fields away is a pretty good shot.

It could very well be that they went for center mass, but hit high. I think that's more likely than it intentionally being a neck shot. That would still mean they knew enough to aim for the heart/lung area.

He was wearing body armor and had his own private security at the event, not counting the 6 or so cops there. He was about as prepared as any celebrity could be. President Trump was nearly killed at a golf course, and that was AFTER ramping up his security, and he's got way more resources at his beck and call than a youtuber.

There's very little you can realistically do to stop stuff like this, besides living your entire life behind bulletproof glass or living inside a bunker and never making public appearances again.

I have to wonder, why not just set up a TV and webcam and livestream from a secure location and interact with people that way?

I don't like it but it seems if you have a family that is the best way to go about things these days, you can still debate people in the crowd who talk to the webcam without putting yourself in danger.

There is no one currently in custody, not sure about suspect status right now. Everything previously mentioned about possible suspects is not vetted as true yet. Two suspects were detained, neither arrested. One definitely isn’t the shooter, just an attention whore. The second suspect questioned was released as well. The FBI & Utah officials are investigating further, going through footage & security cameras, etc. Watching Kash Patel’s updates on X is what most who are monitoring this situation are doing atm. Updates are getting posted here ITT, too many without archives.

Have people here never fired a rifle? 200 yards is nothing even with a small-ish rifle round like .556. A 25-yard zero on an M16 is accurate until 300 yards, until then there’s virtually no difference in trajectory.

For comparison the M1 Springfield was zeroed so 550 yards was point blank. That’s the minimum distance you’re looking for to get an advantage out of 30-06.

All this means is that he put in the effort to zero his rifle properly. Could mean he was ex-military. Or it could mean he just put the bare minimum amount of effort into figuring out how his gun works.

I know it feels like a big event but that's really just buzzing from the already tense, arguably pre-civil war climate.
No event marks the transition between timelines and Overton window shifts, that's for the historians of the future to work this out.
From our existential point of reference, specially for those who lived before the 9/11 era, it is clear that things have changed for the worse. The pace of History and its momentum work on a scale that's difficult to grasp, some decades feel like time just froze and some weeks feels like decades just occurred.

But I digress, I'm not an American citizen so it's hard for me to relate with Kirk's political stance, however I think he did an honorable job by going around university campus to challenge the ideological status quo in liberal establishments. I think it's really sad for him to go like this, leaving a wife and children who absolutely don't deserve to suffer such tragedy.
