Looking at Munich, for example, there’s a grocery store every few blocks, but they’re tiny. It seems like you’d have to go to multiple stores to get the same selection of an American supermarket.

I disagree, as a fellow euro. I don't have time to spend multiple hours hauling stuff between multiple stores. Big supermarkets are the best way to go, just drive there, buy enough stuff for the week, put it in the car and drive home. Pretty much every supermarket has fancy wines, good fish and a butcher's section inside anyway

No, it's in my neighborhood shopping center, less than five minutes away door-to-door. Americans will often travel far to try a new place or to go to their favorite version of something, but they're never far from anything unless they're rural.

In reality, Americans and Europeans eat very similarly and the food quality is indistinguishable (in many cases, they're literally the same products made/grown/raised by the same companies, just with different labeling).

That's the whole point. You have to go to a half dozen stores to get the same stuff than an American gets in one place. All that travel time adds up and you probably spend more time in transit to stores than a rural American does.

A lot of people who take public transport don't even use it to be productive/relaxing while on the tube. The last time I saw someone read a book on the train, it was a fat woman reading female erotica while picking her nose.

The other times you have loud foreigners or faggots blasting their music or being loud in the designated quite part of the train. The most NPC thing is that nobody tries to reprimand them for being loud. A nigger can be talking loudly the entire time and nobody is willing to step up to ask them to be quite. You can see them look agitated at the nigger but never do anything, as if it is out of their control. But when you personally ask the nigger to be quite these NPC's will give you the fluoride stair for doing something so incomprehensible.

You can't really call people NPCs for this when they will most definitely escalate the situation and if you win the encounter, you will be charged and villainized to be the next Derek Chauvin in most western countries. You'd have to live in a country where there's no two tier policing for your statement to make sense.

When they say "efficient public transport system" they don't mean "a public transport system that runs efficiently" they mean "public transportation is more efficient" (it isn't). When they say "access to bike lanes" they mean that they have to a full Netherlands-style bike network or it's "broken" and blame the non-use on the fact that it isn't built out enough. When they say "less car dependency" they mean cramming people into hyper-dense structures and giving them shit options for work and stores. (This is why the bodega cope exists).

I'd say a Moscow-style metro system + A enhanced version of the Dutch bike system (Just fietssnelwegen that don't interact directly with traffic, so that the minimum speed limit can be increased on roads to about 50-60 KM/h without any of the retarded attempts at making cyclists intermingle with cars) would be ideal

They say, with no sense of irony, that they can't use them because it's annoying to have to pass/yield to slower traffic like walkers, joggers, kids riding bikes, and dogs.

I don't know, I personally can get most of that at a supermarket over here as well. Its just that supermarket products are shit quality and it's generally better to buy products from places that specialize in them. This doesn't just count for europe

Once you start picking favorites over closeness, the amount of time could be anything from under a minute to over an hour depending on where you live, where the business is, and the size of the city you live in.

For the big vs tiny supermarkets thing, I'll say it depends of the need. Sometimes you have the time to go buy some fine fruits, meat & wine, sometimes you have to ride to the hypermarket stuffing your car to the brim as fast as possible of cheaper things for the month (like rice or flour).
There is also times when you want to have little chat with the butcher and times when you want as few interactions as possible which supermarket are good for.
I'm lucky enough to have the two options but still have to use the car since I'm not a city dweller, the difference is you can put your car at the outer ring of the town close to the metro/bus/tram system in big parkings made just for this. The city have also a lot of bike lines (we even have some bike-o-meters ) and big open spaces only for walkers and cyclists.
And even that is not enough for these fanatics.

It's not true though. A random carrefour in the outskirts of my random slavic town has really expensive and fancy wines and other types of alcohol (you can find stuff that costs more than 1k PLN easily), great quality and rare cheeses and local sausages from every euro country
Spending half a day walking from one specialty shop to the other is a great way to spend a free day, not for everyday shopping
And those mini markets posted by @quaawaa are usually much more expensive than a normal store

There was something that was on my mind for a while I was trying to find the answer to (besides just asking AI and calling it a day). Whenever you bring up an example to an urbanist of a scenario where a car would be favored such as, moving something awkward or cumbersome. They always retort by trying to point out that in a country with less cars they also have those things too. For example if you say you're a drummer and use a truck/van to carry your stuff, they'll say "Oh I guess people in the Netherlands/Japan don't play the drums then". Well in my case I was trying to find a real example of how actual musicians move their equipment. Despite my username hinting otherwise I am complete ass with Japanese so I was translating keywords like "Day in a life, drummer, musician, transporting instrument".

I know this isn't really that interesting of a revelation to us; however I needed to find a real example for myself. No, they are not carrying their instruments on a cargo bike, they are not carrying them on a bus. They are using a private vehicle. That annoying argument they use has always bothered me because they assume people in more urbanized areas own these things, but never want to admit that they move them around the same way we do and the equipment doesn't magically teleport where it's supposed to be.

Maybe as seen in the previous post where r/fuckcars are making all sorts of assumptions about what the Japanese think. They just assumed that the Japanese don't own cars or something? Or they believed that they are as anti-car as themselves.

The only thing about cars is that I just think 5 billion cars are unnecessary and hurt the environment when we can easily use free forms of transport for everyone, and cars shouldn’t be abolished they just should be limited in spaces that don’t need them (small cities).

Cities wouldn't exist without capitalism. They were built to fiance, manufacturer, and distribute. They stop doing these things and they crumble like Detroit.

These days nobody is building factories and distribution warehouses in the city. It's too expensive. They're built in rural areas where land and power are cheap.
