The fact Nick is comfortable with fear-based discipline in front of witnesses is really disturbing. This friend saw it multiple times and was deeply uncomfortable/disturbed.

It's not so much the discipline per se as the doing it in front of company. If he's doing that with company what the heck is going on behind closed doors. If it's yelling at kids with company I'd guess it's bare minimum excessive spanking behind closed doors. Also with the homeschooling co-op. I grew up with one of those and you have wonderful people and really odd slightly creepy people. Some of the creepy ones are doing drugs or horrible things to their kids.
