It's nuanced but that stance isn't necessarily wrong. Being empathetic (capable of understanding how someone feels) doesn't mean being sympathetic and it doesn't mean you allow your enemies to trample you. You can acknowledge that maybe pedophiles can't actually change their attractions and maybe they're also products of their environment; for the sake of social cohesion they still need to be punished by a State that exists separately from the Church.

Forgiveness in Christianity is less about your relationship with the person you're forgiving and more with your relationship with God. The Christian goal (in most frameworks) is theosis/divinization, which can only be acquired by forsaking your passions for your virtues. It's very funny that a lecture like that would come from him though. He should actually listen to his Priest one day. Maybe he'll teach him how the Trinity works.
