Fewer forks, more spoons

You would have to be counting your spoons to make that kind of joke.
In addition to our Mastodon profile, we now have Bluesky and LinkedIn accounts. You can follow us at @asahilinux.org on Bluesky, and at Asahi Linux on LinkedIn.

Infrastructure ownership

Until recently, most of our infrastructure was under the control of individuals, including domain names. Over the past month, we have been working on transferring as much of this as possible away from developers’ private accounts and into ownership at the project level. This ensures that the project is resilient against any one person leaving. It also makes it easier for project expenses to be accounted for. For example, having our domain names under the financial ownership of Open Source Collective means that all domain-related expenses are processed automatically, rather than needing to paid out by a developer and reimbursed.
Which individuals controlled the infrastructure? The project may be on a healthier trajectory without Lina Marcan.

I don't think Hector is gone.. He is merely.. behind the scenes.. As I was just recently banned from the asahi subreddit for no reason except existing and also questioning why Hector was still a moderator. Then the moderator list went hidden. And Reddit staff became instantly involved. Soooooo.

These instincts are incredible when I don't have FRIENDS telling me to ignore them all my life.

Hector is definitely the most insane of the Asahi Linux developers, so project management would probably improve, but he also seems to have been the most qualified for the job so it's unlikely the project will continue at the same speed without him.
I don't think Hector is gone
This does make it seem like he's still in charge, it would have been easy to say "Marcan is still welcome and is free to rejoin the project whenever he is up to it." The real test is going to be seeing how well Asahi development continues. I have no idea why he would make a fuss about "Lina" leaving the project if he still wanted to work on it, since nobody is willing to call him out except Kiwifarms agents and Lunduke trolls.

Despite leaving, I think the Asahi community is an unburnt bridge for him, and they would take care of that stuff without him lifting a finger. Getting him off the subreddit mod list is low priority when it comes to the "transfer of responsibilities and administrative credentials".

He already had the perfect... well, retarded but doable... option of "quitting" as Hector Martin but remaining on board as Asahi Lina, even when interacting with the Linux kernel maintainers. Instead, he quit twice separated by a month, causing maximum embarrassment.

If we take him at his own word, Asahi was taking up all of his time, it's not fun anymore, and now he's looking for work not paid by Patreon donos:

When I started Asahi Linux, I let it take over most of my life. I gave up most of my hobbies (after all, this was my dream hobby), and spent significantly more than full time working on the project. It was fun back then, but it’s not fun any more. I have an M3 Pro in a box and I haven’t even turned it on yet. I dread doing the bring-up work. It doesn’t feel worth the trouble.

I miss having free time where I can relax and not worry about the features we haven’t shipped yet. I miss making music. I miss attending jam sessions. I miss going out for dinner with my friends and family and not having to worry about how much we haven’t upstreamed. I miss being able to sit down and play a game or watch a movie without feeling guilty.

...

The project will continue on without me, and I’m working with the rest of the team to handle transfer of responsibilities and administrative credentials.

...

If you are interested in hiring me or know someone who might be, please get in touch. Remote positions only please, on a consulting or flexible time/non exclusive basis. Contact: marcan@marcan.st.

Shout out to Hector Martin and Drew DeVault for being the poster childs of CoC pushing cry bullies. Everyone see's it. They're not slick. People are tired of the non-stop gaslighting from these people. You tell them to chill out and they immediately start trauma dumping about their fucking "spoons".

In other news, Hector's DARVO victim/"abuser" was sponsored to work on DLang support for macOS about a week ago.
Ironic given how Hector himself has bowed out from both his own macOS projects and got kicked out from the Rust for Linux project (another non C-language project). Hector must be quietly seething that the D Language Foundation would DARE to sponsor someone who's been assisted indirectly by "Kiwi farms agents". Especially after the failure of a google dockey he dropped.

Wasn't D a transphobic language in the minds of Mastodon troons? Or am I mixing it up with something?

Kinda off-topic but I've been wondering this ever since I've heard about Zig - if people who program in Go call themselves Gophers and people who program in Rust call themselves Rustaceans, then are people who program in Zig... Ziggers? And are people who don't program in Zig but are friendly with them allowed to call them Ziggas?

Andy Kelly noticed it too late and the official term is "ziglings" but it's a language that treats you like niggercattle so it's fully appropriate.

This reminded me that Hector ranted a bit about the D community shortly before he quit Twitter. And it was even stupider than I had remembered:

tl;dr Luna made some unpopular posts on the D forums complaining about their "no politics" rule (or something like that). Hector was still a close friend of Luna's at the time, so he came to the rescue and ranted about how "No Politics" ackshually means "We welcome Nazis, bigots, and abusers!"

Funny quote:
Rust is "political" to keep its community safe and welcoming.

Couldn't even make it through that drek... what a mess.

Honestly, I wish D the best of luck.

Let them be apolitical, let them even "welcome" those folks in, and let the world see things just continue, business as usual, and the personal political views of those present have no effect on the quality of the codebase. The sky doesn't fall. Let the world see.

But nah, these clowns will still find a way to whine about it. They don't care about proof/evidence; they care about how it feels to them. They can't imagine that a literal Nazi may actually just so happen to be a dang good engineer, one whose advancements may actually benefit humanity/society.

Have they not heard of Wernher von Braun? Yeah, he's largely responsible for the Saturn V that brought us to the Moon… and also was a high-ranking member of the bona-fide Nazi party.

But it's like they're incapable of processing that, they just can't fit it into their narrow worldview.

[obligatory "I am not a Nazi" bit]

Wild how these on the radical left have become the very same type of violent, hostile exclusionists that they claim to be so against. The term "projection" comes to mind...

This is going to veer veryoff-topic, but people bringing up 'muh nazi party membership' on von Braun is one of the most disingenuous smears against him.

The Nazis greatly "encouraged" membership of Nazi-affiliated professional organisations/unions if you wanted to progress in your career or secure funding for projects. Not unlike the Soviet Union who valued communist party scientists above any other quality. Government control over industry and science was prioritised over merit, many people had to play the game or lose out - same situation in Communist China today.

von Braun would end up getting arrested after getting tipsy and his lips were too loose regarding his thoughts on the goings of the war.

We had a similar issue when occupying Iraq where we barred all Ba'athist-affiliated people from returning to their prior positions for a while. Somewhere along the line, somebody realised how retarded it was to ban most of the workers essential to maintaining the country based on party affiliation.
