If addiction was only physical nobody would ever relapse, the physical withdrawal is cakewalk compared to the mental part. Especially with modern medication assisted treatment like buprenorphine for opiates, and benzodiazepines for alcohol. You can avoid much of the physical part now… but the mental part is a long lasting chronic condition that gets better for sure over time but never vanishes. You just need to look at someone like Phillip Seymour Hoffman who overdosed on opiates after being clean for a decade or two, that’s why you’ll see someone who hasn’t drank in 30 years at an AA meeting. Bringing it back to Nick he’s mentally weak, and a massive narcissist it’ll be very easy for him to find a reason to drink, or use drugs because he’s very smart you see.

Honestly the Chris Schurr case seems way better suited to Branca. I question why they didn't just wait until this started and instead dropping Nick to hold the bag and an over saturated trial.
