Having grown up in a small nowhere and no-future town, where welfare, drugs, and alcoholism were the norm and not the exception, I'll say that the adage of "Once an addict, always an addict" is pretty spot-on; and it takes damn near illegal to criminal measures to "fix" someone. Addicts have one drive, to get/relive that high, and damn anything else. If they're so far gone, they won't respond to the cries of their family or loved ones, and if you're not willing to beat them into submission and lock them in a cage for a few months for a full detox, and then monitor them every single fucking day for the rest of their lives; if you're not willing to completely throw your life away to fix someone else, there is no cure.

We already know what Nick thinks about his family, they won't pull him from the void; you either lock him up to where his life is controlled and he can't get high, or you go with Chairman Mao, and maybe the one thing he was right about, there's no fixing an addict, and you put them down.

From other research I've done here (more time spent), Kandiyohi County has a very reasonable PO/probationer.ratio. Approximately 1/40 vs. 1/80 across the U.S.. This may be due to:

1. Half the population of the County is rural; they're accounting for travel.
2. Blue state; more funding.

No stats for MN, particularly (that I could find), and random googling gets you to a bunch of generic law firm sites advertising for DUI convictions.

But, conveniently, Reddit has 40K+ members on r/probation (lol), and the consensus is 1x/week - 1x/month.

The "bigger" question is what kind of testing? If it's tracking for alcohol over 30 days, Nicholas is in big trouble. As he said last night - funny he thought of this - Kayla can freely drink.
