Didn't Nick used to have a driver during his streaming career who drove his kids around for him? He also had a Nanny and a Maid IIRC.

As for being an addict, I think that's why the recommendations were made, 30 days in prison to get him clean and make Nick do anything not to go back, (scared straight if you will) and the five year probation is to make sure that if Nick ever does go back on the bottle that most of his kids will be free and clear by that time, or at least have some level of self sufficiency.

That, and the (unpaid) speeding tickets, unpaid registration, etc. His one true virtue is driving his kids places, but the court has plenty of evidence that he is not to be trusted as a driver...

I also love the mention of the nanny/driver suddenly quitting, thus necessitating Nick's filling the role. The court also has the information that the nanny was one of the people originally interviewed for the warrant. Great idea, reminding the court of her, and that the situation in the house was so dire that they drove away their hired help (and couldn't find a single other person in the community willing to take her job.)

Part of me wants the judge to say, "Well, you can't go to jail because you're so busy driving your kids to classes? The school year ends beginning of June. You can report to the count lockup on June 15th," but a bigger part of me wants the judge to rip on how irresponsible of a driver Nick has been, and how utterly stupid he was to commit all these crimes impacting his ability to safely drive, when the well-being of his children was on the line.
