None taken, there's smart and legitimate crazy genes in my family, keen observation. Maybe it's also my hyperactive imagination too, as I had been under ADD medicine in the past.

No, you're not overthinking it.
The definition of "furry" is so vague and contentious and is mostly a self-identified thing anyway.
It doesn't help that "furry" oestensibly refers to all anthro animals but really refers to a cult sexualized subset.
I've always wanted to make a thread to get people to post their definitions but nobody would take it seriously.

There's not really any rules. You don't have to have a fursona or any of that. Someone is a furry if they want to be a furry. That's it.

It seems to me that what people think of as furries today (not in terms of identification, but in terms of what's the average) is what furries would have called furry lifestylers 15+ years ago.

And let's not forget the groomers' definition of a furry: anybody who liked funny animal cartoons as a kid.

Edit: More tenuous, but I think an argument could be made that today's equivalent of the furry lifestyler is the therian. Many of them appear to be nothing more than furrier-than-thou furries, or they're trying to evade the negative and sexual connotations of the term "furry."

If you have a concept of "anthro" in the identifiably furry sense, then you're in their wheelhouse.

I'd say cult "libidinal" (in terms of a focus and conduit of concentrated creative psychic energy) rather than always specifically sexual, although the distinction is purely technical since in nearly 100% of cases the libidinality (I'm gonna make up that word if it doesn't exist) is expressed sexually.

The concept of "anthro animals" (and the archaic term "funny animals", at least these days) doesn't exist outside of furries. It's a furry taxonomical construct.

I'd say that if you have a hyperfixation on furries, whatever you want to call them, you're a furry. It's more than just self-identification. HMOFA types are furries. The difference between furries and all these other terms is the same as the difference between self-identified LGBT and self-identified "MLM" or "SSA": the different terms denote differences in philosophy, but not the underlying cult sexualized subjects. They're all gay, no matter what term they'd prefer.

Concomitantly, HMOFA types and "anthro" enjoyers are furries (and also usually gay).

There could be several reasons, you know. Doesn't have to specifically be what you said. Could be bad experiences with friends or friends who gaslight their other friends to shun the person out of their clique and the overall community. Usually whenever I hear someone getting "bullied out of the fandom", it's mostly because they either said or drew something controversial or wrongthink. Would definitely like to know why they got bullied out the fandom. Can't be because of the icky antifurs. So something's not adding up.

Especially when they said it happened in their early adult years, not when they were a minor or anything. Only adds in more suspicion.
