Firstly, I would never be put in charge of the DNC.
Primary every single current Democrat. New platform is anti-banker, anti-landlord, anti-monopoly, anti-warmonger, anti-interventional, pro-family, pro-union, protectionist, heavy investments in infrastructure, heavy investments in medical and tech research, free merit-based higher education, basic income with 10 hours service per week, and explicit acknowledgement of the distinct interests of demographic groups. Demographic groups are interest groups based on race, religion, and/or nationality.
This would easily earn the majority of the vote. The current oligarchs would start a civil war before they allowed this platform to gain power.

merit is diametrically opposed to the left's views on equity. To wit: When blacks can't keep up or women don't choose to go into STEM, what then?

They would never, ever, allow the idea that whites, Christians, males, or heterosexuals have distinct interests, yet alone that they should be respected in any ways. They only acknowledge and respect demographic groups they have gotten on the plantation (homosexuals, transsexuals, blacks, women, etc.).
It's a good idea in general, but it's fundamentally at odds with the left's current de-facto stance that they should live in the moment, never have to take responsibility for everything, and be provided with food, a place to live, luxury goods, and entertainment 24x7 forever.
In a way if the Transhumanist Singulatarians are right we might luck out in a few decades because most of these fucks are going to go mind upload themselves into Final Fantasy 37 or whatever and we'll never see them again. Failing that, they'll be in VR pods 24x7 being fed by nutrient paste which I'm just as ok with, provided we just feed the nutrient paste grinders with kudzu or algae or something and find some sort of revolutionary new energy tech.
