I'm still of the opinion that despite turning out to be a shitty person and a good part of that was covered up, I don't think he was always a shitty person.Willing to lay down real money there's some woman out there that has some real stories about Nick spending all 4 years of high school obsessing over her.
Back in the days when Rackets wasn't a coke fiend, I remember him saying on The Dick Show something like "There are some things I wished I did differently but I'm happy with the life I have now and how it turned out" (this being back in 2019). I did some digging and I found it since it also had the interview with the "Bagel Boss" manlet and that's the only episode where both of them show up. Notice that Nick sounds VERY different than now because that was before the substance abuse, in the actual way that he speaks. More upbeat, more optimistic.
At 1:46:20 in we start getting this exchange.
Nick: I don't hide from my--I'm not ashamed in my life in any way. A lot these guys, they...
Dick: (cutting in) I wish I could say that.
Sean: Oh wow, that must be amazing.
Dick: (laughing) Wow. (Nick tries to speak, but he cuts him off) So you have mirrors in your house that aren't shattered from you smashing them with glasses and hammers and stuff?
Nick: I'm not saying that I don't have stuff that I wish went differently...
Dick: (disappointed) Oh...
Nick: I'm just saying that everything brought me to now. So what the hell am I complaining about? But either way, they come out here and say, "oh you don't have experience" or whatever...as Kiwi Farms is going through and finding out who some of these guys are.
Dick: Yeah.
Nick: One of these guys is a Minnesota lawyer, "I'm just this new attorney, I don't know anything, I don't do any cases" and then they found out who he was...he's been lawyering less time than I have. He's a junior associate at a criminal defense in the Twin Cities--
Dick: Oh, great.
Nick: And he has no--his bar number is associated with zero cases in Minnesota. And that's not a slight on the guy! I'm not even criticizing his experience in any way...why you are lying about who you are, that's the question. That stuff pisses me off.
It felt likable and genuine at the time. Was a manipulative douchebag even back then, in 2019? Perhaps. Maybe I just don't know Nick well enough but he doesn't seem to have the talent or skill to ever pull off some grand manipulative sociopath angle when he's losing fans with each stream these days.
