Disaster Cocaine "no worse than whiskey," would be "sold like wine" if legalized worldwide, Colombia's president says

Bogota — Cocaine "is no worse than whiskey" and is only illegal because it comes from Latin America, said Colombian President Gustavo Petro during a live broadcast of a government meeting.

Colombia is the world's biggest cocaine producer and exporter, mainly to the United States and Europe, and has spent decades fighting against drug trafficking.

During a six-hour ministerial meeting -- broadcast live for the first time ever -- the leftist president said "cocaine is illegal because it is made in Latin America, not because it is worse than whiskey."

"Scientists have analyzed this. Cocaine is no worse than whiskey," he added, suggesting that the global cocaine industry could be "easily dismantled" if the drug were legalized worldwide.

"If you want peace, you have to dismantle the business (of drug trafficking)," he said. "It could easily be dismantled if they legalize cocaine in the world. It would be sold like wine."

Petro also pointed out that fentanyl "is killing Americans and it is not made in Colombia," referring to the opioid responsible for around 75,000 deaths in the United States each year, according to official data.

"Fentanyl was created as a pharmacy drug by North American multinationals" and those who consumed it "became addicted," he added.

Since coming to power in 2022, Petro has attempted to make peace with all the armed groups that are fueled by drug trafficking, in the hope of ending six decades of conflict.

Cocaine production in Colombia reached a record-high in 2023, jumping 53 percent to 2,600 tons, according to the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime.

Whiskey won't risk me having a heart attack with my first sip.

"If you want people to stop dying, legalize my country's main export that kills people."

Nuke the shithole. We can get coffee somewhere else.

This is not a new idea. Some of the older Kiwis (Gen X and above) might remember in the early 1980s the media praised cocaine as a safe drug. That was the rhetoric until crack hit the streets.

Reminder that the CIA ran cocaine out of South America to get money for slush funds.

USAID audit is really throwing a monkey in the wrench for all the money laundering the Deep State does. I'm guessing the plan is to bring it in the open and make it accepatable so Columbia can keep that gravy train going.

I mean Rekieta already was quoting that quack 'doctor' who made up some crazy 1 in a million theories about cocaine metabolites. Maybe he needs to talk to these 'scientists' too and start screaming about how it's totally science that he dosed his kid with cocaine and he was just ahead of his time.

They used to make it into a wine tonic. I'd be happy with that, Pope Leo XIII promoted it.

Vin Mariani, created in the 1860s by Angelo Mariani, was a coca wine and patent medicine that contained cocaine. The ethanol in the wine extracted cocaine from the coca leaves, and Vin Mariani originally contained 6 mg of cocaine per fluid ounce of wine (211.2 mg/L), though the exported version had a higher concentration of 7.2 mg per ounce (253.4 mg/L). Analysis of a 19th-century bottle of Mariani wine revealed it contained cocaine (86 ng/mL), benzoylecgonine (383 ng/mL), and other substances like cocaethylene (17 ng/mL) and ecgonine methyl ester (130 ng/mL).

They used to make it into a wine tonic.
That wine tonic was not only used for medicine but was used for recreational purposes as well. The original Coca Cola recipe was based on the original wine tonic formula. When Prohibition passed in the U.S. and wine tonics were forbidden it made Coca Cola much more popular. All all it was, was the wine recipe just with carbonated soda substituted instead, with all the cocaine remaining. Because the idea at the time was that the wine part of the wine tonic drink was addictive and unhealthy. Not the cocaine part. So Coca Cola began selling their cocaine sodas all over the U.S. and greatly expanding their sales efforts.

Coca Cola imported so much cocaine that they trademarked the term 'coke'. And at one point the bottles were named 'Coke' like the drug. Right now in the United States only one company has a special DEA license to import cocaine. Which company? Coca Cola. They have a plant in New Jersey that processes cocaine for drug companies and is monitored by the DEA and FBI (and probably the CIA).

Bullshit. I thought we learned this with marijuana. You can't just convert criminal enterprises into nice, clean, taxable income without going after the criminals hard and fast; the shit border control under the Biden administration couldn't even charge anyone with tax evasion and stuff flows in through the borders anyway.

FTR, he just asked all the ministers to resign.

It was that bad.

Honestly? Legalize everything. Make everyone OD and plummet the population numbers. What, think a well-educated single mother raising a future lawyer is gonna suddenly pick up a bunch of hard drugs cause they're legal?
