I don't remember the whole argument off the top of my head, so you should research it if you want to read more, but the logic was that even if it gets the right results, it's NOT because it's right. Like, Ptolemaic Cosmology believed that the earth was fixed in one particular spot, never moving, but it was still able to make accurate enough predictions to help sea navigation.

To my understanding it doesn't even effect grants that were already awarded. So it ends up being a delay before the next grant.
It sucks that there has to be a delay but I guess it has to happen because all these departments would panic under an audit and start issuing "free money for retards" grants before the whole department gets axed.
Looking forward to more money being available for meaningful R&D in the future.
The last few years have seen a record low taxpayer funds being spent on R&D due to foreign aid and other spending.
