What April and Kayla have in common are the two of them are not fully formed human beings. For whatever reason, due to upbringing, culture, mental illness, or their own bad traits, they are the types to outsource all of their decision-making and personality to their partner—in this case, Nick. In other words, one of the worst possible people to be completely dependent on or take direction from.

Both of them have placed themselves at such an unenviable level of emotional and economic dependence on Nick that improvement will never manifest. Going off a quick skim of some obits and Facebook the wife, Jess Hatfield (née Delk) came from Indiana and her entire family stayed there, while Caleb's parents Janet and Steve also raised him in Indiana before moving to Oregon in his adulthood, so the earliest Minnesota connection appears to have been when his brother Andrew moved to Minnesota and stayed there likely to be closer to the family of his wife Liz Hatfield (née Gehrke), whose family came from the nearby Montevideo area and eventually settled in Spicer. Notably Caleb's dad also worked in corrections at one of the large prisons in the New Castle/Middleton area where Caleb and Jess came from, so it would make sense that Caleb started out in the family business and moved to Minnesota near his brother looking for similar work, ultimately meeting Dan Sletta in that connection.

In any event, between Facebook and the public marriage name search portal there's no sign of anyone on the Gehrke side of the family having married into the Woltjers' or Slettas' extended family either, so if they were relatives it would have to be as very distant cousins if at all.
