As far as value for money goes, you can get 100 acres and a 1500 square ft home in a rural area for the price of a similar sized house in the city. As long as you're used to living in the country it's far better value and quality of life than living in a city. I don't know why anyone would want to live in a big city, apart from the obvious downsides of it being overcrowded, traffic, crime, people aren't meant to live like ants, all packed in together, I much prefer small towns, people are friendly, you know your neighbors, your neighbors are far enough away you don't bother each other.
Unless you have no choice, whether for work or economic reasons, country beats city for me everytime.

I can understand him wanting to live where he does rather than Minneapolis or St Cloud.

We can speculate about motives, influences, blame, etc., but these are the facts as we know them:

Both Nick and Kayla have failed as parents. Both of them put their own hedonistic pleasure ahead of their responsibilities as guardians of their children. Both of them decided to become debauched swingers and druggies in a house full of minor children. (They could have partied away from the kids, but chose to expose their kids to their hedonism.) Both parents are fuckups who have demonstrated that they are incapable of the responsibility of being a parent.

People can try and blame Nick as the devil who led his wife down a dark path, but whether or not that's true, the fact remains that Kayla did give into temptation. She not only failed to shield or rescue her kids from her husband's debauched lifestyle, she chose to participate in it. Failure is failure. A weak parent who can be persuaded to neglect their kids is just as bad as a parent who decides to neglect his kids.
