Depeche Mode would also be in the running for me had Violator (release date: March 19th, 1990) been released about three months earlier.

Violator was their one "good" album, let's be honest here. Anything else they did later was unremarkable and anything they did earlier was not nearly as radio-friendly. Violator was the magnum opus of Depeche Mode.

I generally agree but "Just Can't Get Enough" is one pretty good radio-friendly song from 1981.

Anyway, it occurred to me while I was out shopping that, if we're talking about 1980s musical acts in general and not just bands, Weird Al Yankovic wins the 1980s for me in terms of how many of his 1980s albums I actually own (all six 1980s studio albums released up to and including the UHF soundtrack album, which also had several songs not from the movie).
"Midnight Star" from Weird Al Yankovic in 3D (1984) is probably a personal top 25 song for me just for the intro alone, before he even starts singing.

Some of their 80s shit is really, really good. The solo from this song is one of my all time favorite Dime solos.
As for my favorite band of the decade? Iron Maiden by a long shot. Powerslave is the album that got me in them when it was released.
