I get the representation angle to some degree. It's easy to dismiss it and I know I sound dangerously SJW-y now, but if you're white and/or straight, you have no shortage of characters to relate to in western media. Being different can be hard and seeing a character who is different in the same way as you, but also strong, capable and loved by the audience can help some people feel better about themselves.
I get that. It just seems to me that a LOT of these things end up being half assed shoehorned attempts at marketing, or it develops into a fetish of sorts resulting in everything being some form of queer.
Tbh it makes me a bit angry that these people take the struggle of other people so casually.
