You can play as a man or woman; you can date men and women regardless of your sex, marry and move in with one of said men and women, and even your partner still won't refer to you by anything other than "you", the character name, or terms of endearment. There are no NPCs having hidden conversations about the quality of Farmer Bob's turnips and refusing to say that "zer" produce hasn't been good this season.

I haven't played Stardew Valley in ages but there are definitely references to the main character's sex. Normal families fuck to have babies and the woman (PC or npc) gets pregnant, homosexual couples adopt. Romance dialogues are different for male and female characters. If a male PC violates an old guy's grandson, he comments on it. One bachelorette has a jealous ex whose sex is the same as the PC's, who shows up and makes a scene. There MAY BE instances where the PC is addressed as mister/miss or lad/lass or something. There are many scenes where npcs interact and there actually MAY BE npcs having hidden conversations about the quality of Farmer Bob's turnips. There may be scenes in which npcs have open conversations about the quality of Farmer Bob's turnips ("And now, the finale of the Harvest Festival! Farmer Bob grew the biggest turnips this year, let's give him a round of applause!) "Finally, it's an RPG about growing pixel veggies, playing-pretend is all there is to it. If you pick a sex at character creation, then yes your character is that sex, even with no references in the game.

That said, there are more reasons than the obvious ("do not cater to a sex offender's demands", "don't groom children") to not have slugs in the game. Female characters give birth, slugs can demand to qualify or not qualify for that -- should the game prompt them for "who's having the baby"? What about regular troons, what if they want to get pregnant/impregnate in spite of their in-game sex? Slugs IRL look like the sex they are (except they're always ugly) and you can't usually tell it demands to be referred in the plural, so a pronouns ritual needs to feature in all introduction scenes. Sentences with the player's pronouns in them have to be rechecked for clarity.

Terraria has woke pronouns now and it's gross. "Mairwenn fell to THEIR death." I hate reading that more than I hate pissing away a hardcore character because I switched to a mining outfit to finish isolating crimson and forgot the fucking horseshoe.
