OK, but calling someone a pedo can have drastic negative impacts to person's business, especially for a lawyer, when the business is essentially them and them alone. And the impact can be many 10ks, depending on what you are earning. Beyond that, I don't think Nick really knew what kind of person he was dealing with. Regardless of Montagraph's other eccentricities, he is very resourceful and clever. He is someone who has hidden his identity for decades, sending potential doxers down rabbit holes of pre-prepared false names and addresses. If I am remembering correctly, he somehow obtains and routinely calls the personal cell phone numbers of sitting politicians ranging from mayors to senators and gets them to chat with him for extended lengths of time over random topics. He also seems to show a readiness to bring people into prolonged legal fights when they slight him.
Which there’s no excuse for, since all of the content Nick was commenting on at that time was about Monty hauling people into court and being extremely sue-happy. Imagine being such an out of control drunk that you dare an extremely litigious creep to sue you for comments you know to be defamatory per se. (Or at least Nick should know that about pedophilia accusations, considering his career as a legal “expert.”)
Nick had some weird shit last summer where he was stanning for a "trans friendly" summer camp that was ran/facilitated by a family member of his. He has always given out weird hints that he might actually be ok with transing kids. Back when I wanted to like him i tried to not look into that shit to hard, but at this point I'm waiting to find out that he has some Desmond Naples looking molestation victim nephew that he pretends is doing great.
It's funny, because during the Weeb Wars days, Rekieta defended the extreme cost of litigation in the US and said that the way these extreme costs force opposing parties to get together and settle is an intentional mechanism of the system. I remember thinking he was such a kike after that.

I dont think he wouldve settled for $20 and a public apology. First because he wouldve to accept he was wrong and second because i think he really believed he could make more money with content associated to the lawsuit and crowfunding
