The thing is, he's already rejected things like Jin Roh, which is anime, yes, but for the stylistic things that usually identify anime (and that Josh hates), it might as well not be. It could be characterized as simply adult-rated animation, and it covers themes that Josh would probably enjoy.

But he rejected it out of hand.

So I don't think he'll accept anything if it's recommended under the umbrella of anime, because he doesn't know, and has no reason to know, that it's not the usual bullshit. Won't matter if you tell him, he won't take it.

That being said, Rurouni Kenshin. One of the few I will actually watch, even if it is dated.

That said, the Trust and Betrayal OVA is a masterpiece of not just anime, but animated cinema and everyone should watch it. Hell, it's one of the best (semi) historical samurai movies ever made.
And the soundtrack is FUCKING AMAZING.

(I say "movie", but it's a 4-episode miniseries; there's a director's cut that turns it into a movie, but somehow the director fucked up and made some bad decisions, particularly with the music, that make it worse than the episodic version)

Purely hypothetically because it is obviously never happening, but the Legend of the Galactic Heroes OVA, for having absolutely no anime bullshit in it. Everyone is a normal, functional adult, there’s no fan service, the plot makes sense and doesn’t have any weird Japanese nonsense. People dress normally and have relatively normal hair. The soundtrack is all European classical music. The only problems I can think of are that it’s not dubbed, it’s mostly dry political philosophy or military dialogue and it’s long as fuck, which would probably be the biggest sticking point.

I feel i should say something since I started this. Your criticisms are valid. I'll admit there's a lot of trash, and I don't think you should be forced to watch it. I don't think it's worthless however. There's a lot of cool fights, fun entertainment, which compared to everything in the last 13 years, barring some exceptions like Top Gun and strangely enough Fast and Furious (Because it stays true to it's core audience), it's a lot better. Either watch Star Trek get its canon raped and ugly Klingon sex in discovery, the 900th season of NCIS, literally anything on TLC, or watch a goofy world with adventurers. I'm just saying man, the west ain't putting out.

That said, the main reason i made this was really just the challenge of it all. To find the impossible. I understood from the beginning you wouldn't watch it. As someone who is not a weeb and used to feel about anime the same way you do now, it's like wholeheartedly rejecting western animation because of faggy Steven Universe fans. There's a lot that you can criticize in anime as a whole, especially the rather similar stylistic "choices" and lower-quality, lower-framerate animation, among other things, but there really is a lot of anime that isn't complete weeb shit.

Ignoring obvious classics like movies like Grave of the Fireflies which is historical and as un-weeb as it gets, anime really runs the gamut. The problem is is you're judging anime by the anime you're exposed to by internet culture, which is going to fixate more on shit like JoJo and creepy schoolgirl shit.

Anime tends towards the extremes a lot, and the internet shows you one extreme unfortunately. Anime likewise has the potential to either be extremely disgustingly cutesy or over the top violent. Though it can often be extremely pretentious but also have some rather smart plots like Steins;gate being based entirely around the John Titor meme/prank on early Usenet and Titor being an actual time traveler (which is brilliant premise for show).

The correct solution is to just watch whatever shows are good. Writing off all anime is just a reaction from all the dorky internet communities that have sprung up and how pop culture celebrates faggy chibi weeb shit. Movies like Perfect Blue and Paprika are pretty good by themselves, and

So if you want me to recommend an anime I think is non shit, try From The New World. One thing I like about anime is that it can often be darker and bleaker than western animation which always tries to find the silver lining at the end. Anime seems to be more about appealing to different niches whereas western animation tries for more universal appeal. I don't think people should go out of their way to "watch anime." They should just look for a good show to watch. Sometimes it's anime, but rarely is it anime that you see discussed on forums and shit.

I can't understand hating on anything Studio Ghibli puts out. Sure, it's steeped in Japanese culture, like Disney stories are (or were, at least) for the west, but the difference is everything Studio Ghibli puts these days is better than anything Disney puts out both creatively and artistically and I doubt anyone can argue against that given what Disney has been up to.

I think this is the main issue. 4chan is not a good recommender of anime. It really isn't. Especially not 8chan, which Null modded. There are a lot of smart shows like Steins;gate which if i had to put it's crudeness on a barometer to a western TV show... it's like Chuck if anyone remembers that, except it focuses way more on the nerd side. Gundam is a pretty solid choice if you like big robots and the horrors of war. Same with western shows. On one end you got the Brady bunch. On the other you got Game of Thrones. Both are mediums and have a range. It all depends on what you want.

Saying you hate anime is like saying you hate all country music because you heard Luke Combs and never heard Johnny Cash. I follow an 80/20 rule. 80% of everything is garbage, and most people like garbage. 20% or around tends to be good and lesser-known, though sometimes very well known. The problem is you don't see anime in public places much (though that has changed in recent years) beyond DBZ or whatever, only online, and the people that most loudly socialize about anime tend to be the biggest faggots with worst taste and most pedophilic inclinations. These are the people that sit around and MEME all day and their tastes reflect their hobbies.
