I think it’s just a matter of degree really. The first cow I encountered online (a Pat orbiter, Shane Nokes) randomly jumped into a very polite and friendly conversation I was having with another user on a gaming site about something autistic like what was the best weapon for a particular mission in the game. Shame burst into the conversation out of nowhere to tell me that not only was I wrong but I was the world’s dumbest moron, then when I said something like “lighten up buddy nobody asked you” he went off about working at Xbox and how he’d get me banned from the internet, then started making all these wierd threats of what he was going to do to me and my wife. I hadn’t even mentioned a wife so I was really confused. Who on a gaming forum assumes people have wives or girlfriends? Then while I was considering whether or not to be a reporting faggot, he deleted all his outbursts. I wondered for a while whether he mistook me for someone else or what that was all about. I took to checking in on him online sometimes when I was bored, and saw him being the same kind of cunt to other people, and started finding it funny. I’m betting a lot of Patposters found Pat in a similar way. They both just go zero to schizo over nothing in a hot second. Shane is more “welcome to your nightmare” and Pat is more “listen to your betters you little baby child” but they are both unforgettable once encountered in the wild.

Its no one thing, it comes in waves. Early stuff was calling Norm unfunny, which resulted in the normal return jokes on reddit, which Pat went nuclear on. But that only brought a few in, but each time, more is added to the mass.
As with most lolcows, no single event made them the way they are. It's a pattern they just repeat, and sometimes the right person at the right time catches wind of it and boom, a thread is born and the snowballing effect can begin. Also, Pat is directly antagonistic to the people mocking him, so it just amplifies his status as a target for ridicule.
If you mean on a deeper "why is he the way he is" that's a bit harder, but he seems typical for his type. Mother appeared to have been overprotective to a point Pat rarely had to account for shitty actions. Over time, without someone to set him straight, he just grew up to be the man you see today.

Most "atheists" in America today assail Christianity for not being Christian enough.
