Rapper Afroman is being sued by several Ohio law enforcement officials after he put footage of their 2022 raid on his house in music videos about the incident.

The Grammy-nominated rapper, who is best known for his 2002 jam “Because I Got High,” made a whole album about the August 2022 raid in which police broke down his door based on a search warrant for drug trafficking and kidnapping. No evidence supporting those allegations was found and no charges were filed.

He told NPR of the incident, “I asked myself, as a powerless Black man in America, what can I do to the cops that kicked my door in, tried to kill me in front of my kids, stole my money and disconnected my cameras? And the only thing I could come up with was make a funny rap song about them and make some money, use the money to pay for the damages they did and move on.”

The musician, whose given name is Joseph Edgar Foreman, wrote about the raid in several of his songs, including “Lemon Pound Cake,” which opens with they lyrics, “The Adams County sheriff kicked down my door, then I heard the glass break. They found no kidnapping victims, just some lemon pound cake.”

In the surveillance footage included in the video, police are shown kicking in the door and walking past the titular cake on the kitchen counter. Afroman told NPR that the cops also broke his video surveillance system and stole $400 from him.

Four deputies, two sergeants and one detective from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office are now suing him, his label and a Texas-based music distribution company for invasion of privacy.

In the complaint filed last week, they said they have received death threats, and also suffered “humiliation, ridicule, mental distress, embarrassment and loss of reputation.” Unless the music videos and social media posts are taken down, “Plaintiffs will suffer irreparable injury to their reputations, their mental health, and their legally protected rights,” the complaint read.

They are also seeking all proceeds of the songs and videos, as well as his merchandise, including sales of the malt liquor made by his 4204 Main Street Brewing Company.

Afroman said his reaction to the lawsuit was “a drop of anger, disbelief and a little anxiety, followed by tons of laughter. I was thinking, these big bad cops … are being beat up and bullied by those little corny rap songs I made about them. I’m like, ‘Oh my god, are you letting me know that my raps are working on you?'”

He was already planning a defamation lawsuit against the police and now plans to countersue. “I want to sue them for stealing my money, I want to sue them for writing ‘kidnapping’ on a warrant and making me suffer financially in my industry because just that accusation makes people raise an eyebrow about you,” he added.

In December, Afroman announced he was running for U.S. President in 2024 as an Independent on the platform of getting “weed legal everywhere.”

I never liked afroman. I remember hearing Colt 45 back in the early 2000's with my White friends and seeing some of the creepy early stages of nigger worship. My former best friend's sister is now a coal burning single mother, and he's an Eminem fan that named his daughter Hayley. I don't associate with any of those people anymore.

As much as I dislike rap, potheads and musicians I'm on afroman's side here. I saw the videos, the song was funny, and I am fucking sick of the police getting away with wrecking people's shit for nothing, excecuting warrants on the wrong addresses and not facing any jailtime, etc. Police should have zero right to privacy when on the job, nothing you do while on the job should even remotely be considered your intellectual property. If you're a cop you are an armed stooge of the government, you should be compelled to be transparent under threat of criminal action and forbidden from suing the people you can just decide to kill and likely get away with it. Let's not forget police kill whites more often than blacks, and that they frequently enforce flat out illegal laws that are only on the books because dickless lawyers and politicians think they have the right to just "re-interpret" the constitution.

Nonsense, I'm sure this actual retard who embodies every stereotype about rappers imaginable
It looks like he's married to the mother of his kids, and I'm not aware of him having shot anyone/gotten shot, so certainly not every stereotype.

I do think that botched raids which damage people's property without accomplishing genuine law enforcement goals should count as takings that requires compensation.

Invasion of privacy.
Of public officials.
Conducting official business.
On someone else's private property.
While possibly wearing body cameras on their own.

The same idiots who thought of this raid ought to be put in stockades on the courthouse steps for a week with complimentary rotten produce provided to the public, free of charge, as a condition of the countersuit.

Hot take: the right to privacy on your own private property is real, intellectual """property""" isn't and people have no right in what someone chooses to do with their own property.

IP is a meme of anglo jurisprudence which is rooted in monopoly and protectionism. Its been culturally foisted upon the world by the anglosphere and it has permeated western thinking to an insane degree. There are very few brave nations left still refusing to recognize it (and being immensely successful doing so, looking at china).

I, for one, salute the glorious CCP in their counterfeiting campaign against western pigdog IP monopolies!

ADAMS COUNTY, Ohio (WXIX) - Rapper Afroman is set to stand trial March 16 after Adams County deputies sued him over a music video he made using security footage from a 2022 raid on his home.

How it started

In August 2022, Adams County deputies raided the home of Joseph Foreman, better known as Afroman, with a search warrant tied to an investigation into possible drugs and kidnapping victims. No charges were filed after the raid.

Deputies seized thousands of dollars in cash, which was later returned, but Afroman said about $400 was never recovered.

Afroman said the raid left damage throughout his home, and that the Adams County Sheriff’s Office told him it was not responsible for paying for repairs.

“The guy started laughing and waddling his head, and said we’re not required to do that. They were unapologetic,” Afroman said.

The music video

Afroman said he turned the experience into music, using his own security footage from the raid in a music video to help pay for the repairs.

“I use my personal life to write my music,” he said. “Will you help me repair my gate, will you help me repair my door. I’m singing about what actually happened to me.”

Deputies who appear in the video are now suing the rapper for damages caused by their likenesses being used in the video.

The countersuit

Afroman filed a countersuit for the damages to his home. Judge Jonathan P. Hein dismissed those claims in February.

“I don’t like that they dismissed all of my claims with a click of a button in some little office somewhere without a hearing,” Afroman said.

Afroman said the lawsuit against him is not just about money — he believes it is a violation of his freedom of speech.

“I should have freedom of speech. I should be allowed to speak out about my life, and police officers that violate my home and steal my money should not be allowed to sue me,” he said.

FOX19 NOW reached out to the judge, the attorney for the deputies, and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office but haven’t received any responses.

he didn't even blur the faces. althought some of it is so pixelated its not *exactly* clear, but other guys are identifiable.

Why exactly should cops have privacy while doing their jobs if they are in public or in somebody elses home?

I quite clearly remember that the TV show cops did not censor faces and courts do not either.

cops and arestees signed off on their likeness rights for the tv show cops because its a commercial thing, courtrooms are public proceedings.

This isn't about privacy. It's about profiting off the likeness of others without consent. You can't do that.

Nigga how dumb are you? They're public figures just like politicians. If they do dumb shit you're allowed to criticize them, if they do dumb shit in public you're allowed to film them, and you're especially allowed to film them, name them and shame them if they invade your private property and vandalize it based on a false premise and no justifiable cause.

and you're allowed to profit off mocking or criticizing public figures. It's been that way longer than fucking Mad Magazine existed. You can't be a "private" citizen when you're going out into public everyday and acting as an agent of the state, and many states and situations require them to explicitly identify themselves in public.

I know in places like the UK you're expected to elderly reptile ass WEF drones fuck your ass with no recourse, but this is the United States of Motherfucking America. An entire union born entirely out of disgust and spite for England and the heavily inbred tyrants who run it.

If we adopted the standard you're endorsing, this whole fucking site would have to be shut down completely. KF goes way further than anything Afroman did, with figures who are far more private than these cops.

Hot take: the right to privacy on your own private property is real, intellectual """property""" isn't and people have no right in what someone chooses to do with their own property.
Now this nigga got the right idea! Now, I'm not exactly as radical on this point as others, but I think IP law in most places is highly out of date. Most IP laws in the US were written when radio was brand new. Let alone the internet. The original and obvious intent behind these laws (namely, preventing plagiarism etc) has become massively buried under a huge cloud of dumb bullshit to warp it into a weapon corporations can use to enshittify every aspect of society.

If it's a fight between someone constitutional right to criticize the very public figures who have a state-enforced monopoly on violence, and the right not to have a bunch of goons with guns invade and wreck your home for no reason, vs the "right" of a bunch of crooked cops not to be publicly insulted or mocked because they have an "intellectual copyright" on their names and faces, I'm gonna go with the former because it actually makes any goddamn sense at all, while the latter is some clown world bullshit that can only come at the tail end of a bunch of bureaucracy, hypocrisy and just plain ol' retardation.

TL;DR: You're a retard if you don't side with Afroman on this. Full stop. 100%. Doesn't matter if you like him or his music, this is about as black and white an issue can get if you have a brain.

Hopefully the Jury isn't fucking retarded and they see it that way too.

I assume with either the cautious approval of, or against the advice of, his lawyer, Afroman has been dropping diss tracks against various individuals suing him, using information and footage from the deposition.

According to this video: a police officer claimed the public mockery from Afroman's fanbase put such an emotional strain on his marriage that it caused a divorce. However, apparently the ex-wife came to Afroman's attorney (or they just looked up the divorce filing) and she claimed the real reason was her ex was fucking drug addicts in exchange for not giving them speeding tickets.
