I was looking for a quick citation pertaining to the extreme rarity of ovotesticular disorder or “true hermaphroditism” (~ 500 individuals identified in the literature) and ran into this very very complex individual.
The bottom line, arguably, is that this person’s sexual development was so disordered that he wasn’t male OR female in the reproductive sense. Not that he was both.
Ovotestes in mammals aren't functional in both roles. And the individual overall still went down one of the two overall sex development pathways, which is the primary determiner of sex.
