The hair by itself is not a give away (regardless of the pejorative 'dangerhair') I know a lot of... quirky... chicks who think that differently coloured hair gives them personality. Add to that teenage/college angst and... 'fashion'... (a.k.a. Muh Frens R Doin It!) and you have what could be a normal-ish person.

Seriously, I see a lot of women in their 30's and 40's doing the coloured hair. If you ask me, it looks tacky on them (while it makes younger girls look like prostitutes) but whatever...

The only part I can't figure out is that I thought she was older than Nick. I must be wrong bc the parents just celebrated their 40th anniversary (unless his mom was making a joke).

In Minnesota, protestant churches are heavily Lutheran which follows a similar liturgical structure to Catholic mass. And they have better music I've been to a bunch of both kinds (where I grew up everyone was either Catholic or Lutheran) and it's all pretty much the same. Obviously there are major differences in the catechism but that doesn't really get brought up in a sermon. Might not be as such around the world but it is in small town Minnesota.


As far as I remember, the Lutheran Church doesn't tell you not to take communion for any reason. Confession is a private matter.

It depends on the Lutheran church. There are ELCA Lutheran churches in Minnesota that are totally crazy. They are mostly near the cities, but there are rural congregations which have been dragged off to crazy-town by the sort of pastors the ELCA produces these days.
I've posted it before, but if anyone wants to see how batshit crazy the ELCA can be these days, take a look at herchurch.

Yeah, you can find really conservative congregations in rural areas in Minnesota, but the infrastructure of the ELCA as a whole is firmly under the control of very bad people.

Oh, I am very well aware how pozzed the ELCA is.
A relative of mine had to endure watching their Lutheran church go through a very messy schism over this very issue (and officiating gay marriages). One half was either very loyal to the ELCA and/or were sympathetic to the alphabet people and wanted to remain with ELCA, the other half wanted to leave, citing biblical principals, and join another synod. The former sullied respected members of the congregation (including my relative) and threatened to defrock the pastor if the decision to leave went through. Like I said, it wasn't pretty.

Really? Maybe we just live in two very different areas but every single Catholic I've ever met only goes to church maybe on Christmas or Easter. I actually went to a local Catholic church once to check it out and there was barely anyone there for all the 'Catholics' I meet in my area. They're also all deviants like Nick as well. Sex is all the men talk about, it's like hanging out with blacks. Whereas Nick would be taken aside privately and asked what was up with his deviancy if he attended any non-Catholic church I've been a part of, but to be fair if he's going to a mega-church he could easily get lost in the crowd and no one would even notice.

I do live on the west coast though so there's no old school Jersey style Catholics that I see on the TV.

Eh, you wouldn't be too off the mark out east either. The crowd that shows up to weekly mass is anemic compared to the standing room only masses on Christmas and Easter. Its very much a a meme at this point.

Most people who were raised Catholic continue to identify as catholic into adulthood even if they are essentially fully lapsed. A lot of places are culturally catholic so everyone is exposed to the culture- Friday fish frys in the Midwest is an example. That’s how you get people who say they’re Catholic while being alcoholics, never going to church, reading their Bible, or praying, not believing in any of the sacraments, being OK with porn, extramarital sex, birth control, abortion, etc.

I guarantee if any of those people were socializing with churchgoers, and spoke that way they’d be given embarrassed looks and taken aside at best and given a serious talk by their priest at worst.

Yeah, it’s a point where you can call some people Chreasters. They show up for Christmas and Easter. Some people who put more effort in actually do the Holy Days of Obligation (Ascension, Good Friday, etc).

I have family who are very involved in Catholic Youth Organizations (Sports, Art and Music, and Volunteering) and weekend meetings are usually at a morning Mass. A lot of kids don’t go regularly and it’s honestly the main organ laypeople have to get kids involved in the faith.
I know more than a few people who basically only really became Catholics because their Middle School or High School coaches (parent volunteers and teachers) were deep in the faith and were positive influences.

Regardless, if you look in my post I quoted in the one I linked, there seems to be no shortage of drama in the family. Looks like her husband, Nic, held out on their marriage until 2011-2012 and their daughter turned 18, but in 2013 he was already dating the chick he'd marry next (and is still married to, AFAIK per Facebook).
