He doesn’t understand presenting facts or even ridicule. He seems to genuinely believe that his tough guy facade ought to be enough to cow whoever he’s speaking to, even and especially over the Internet.

Its just his childish cuntiness. The podcast guy wants him to disavow the pedophile so Pat can't help himself and has to dig in and refuse to do it. I don't think it's a conscious choice. Its the same compulsion that makes it impossible for him to not respond to every single troll message. I'm sure his wife, the police, his lawyer and everyone else he talks to about his atalkers has told him to just ignore them and stop responding. But he knows better than everyone else and won't listen. Its a cliche thing to say, but he actually is his own worst enemy. He's really stupid but he thinks he's really smart. He's the living embodiment of dunning-kruger.
If the traffic case was recorded, i can't recall ever listening to it. I do remember the drunk guy confrontation and, to me, it was a snippet of something that could be amazing. He even asked the judge how he could appeal in his laughable British accent.
