The more complicated version: it has its origins in the medieval political entanglement between France and England. The result of the Norman conquest of England in 1066 was that, for the next few centuries, the kings of England also ruled directly over a portion of France. This naturally resulted in a series of conflicts to decide who controlled what. Warring tribes. England had territorial claims through the monarchy of most Northern France for quite some time. They fought over that for centuries. Included in this is various succession wars, fighting over bloodlines and who owns what throne of what country.

England, being protestant, occasionally invaded France due to their violent suppression of Calvinists.

They also fought over control of the English Channel.

Napoleon caused issues as well. He was very much a progressive force throughout Europe, supplanting the Monarchy with "civilian" rule, which scared the shit out of all the other monarchies around France.

It didn't end with WWI. England declared war on and invaded France during WW2 as well.
