I heard in America there was a brief phenomenon of mothers trying to emulate their teenage daughters. They'd wear the same clothes and hang out in the same places. The mothers would even flirt with younger guys. They would also try to get their daughters to join modeling agencies and whatnot.

Well, let's start with the number of trans people. Being generous, it's about 0.5% of the population. Then we discount the fact that most of those people aren't actors. Of those that are, most will not be particularly good (this is true of all actors, trans or otherwise). That leaves a very, very small pool of actors to choose from. Then you have to bear in mind that the role will demand specific qualities - a specific age, a specific size, a specific ethnicity, a specific level of femininity/masculinity - and you're pretty much fucked. Yes, thank you so much for stating that kids discover being trans when they hit puberty. I've had to clarify the issue with so many people before who thought trans kids are trans their entire childhoods...But I digress. Most "trans" prepubescents end up being gender non-conforming, ie. tomboys or effeminate males.
I quoted a couple research papers about gender experimentation among children. The statistics were that boys who experimented as being girls, 85% ended up just being straight-acting gay males. However, an almost equal amount of girls who experimented as being boys ended up becoming transmen.
