The 50’s housewife fetish is just another thing that outs these men as being men. As if their understanding of being a housewife is derived entirely from pin up fashion and vintage commercials.
the reality is that being a housewife involves work. Now, and even more so back before much of the convenience foods and appliances we take for granted today. Keep in mind that in the fifties it was much less common for a household to have two cars. That means that the husband would take the car to work and the wife would do what errands she could on foot while being sure to plan ahead for the week on the weekend when she was able to take the car to town. Doing the laundry in the fifties was also much more laborious than it is now that most of our clothing doesn’t require ironing and fast fashion has basically eradicated the chore of mending and patching. In the fifties it was also generally cheaper and more common to sew your own clothes, particularly your childrens clothes. And if you have kids you know how quickly they outgrow or wear out clothing items that then need to be replaced with new sets or mended. Another aspect of the work involved in housewifery is cooking. There are a lot more convenience food options now than in the fifties, and the stigma against using shortcuts is lesser now too. A housewife in the fifties would be solely responsible for planning, prepping, and cooking three meals a day for her entire family.
Several years ago there was a trend among stay at home moms called like the “Judy cleaver weight loss challenge” or something, I don’t remember, that promised modern stay at home moms that they would lose weight if they lived like a fifties housewife because of all the physical labor involved in home and child care in those days.
This idea that fifties housewives spent their day in front of the mirror primping and lounging about in her home doing as she pleased is about as realistic as if someone looked at a febreeze ad today and deduced that housewives nowadays are regularly grinning deliriously in their immaculate homes and experiencing near orgasmic delight at the scent of Fresh Linen Breeze. It’s all a bunch of commercial nonsense.
This became a longer rant than I intended but my point is that the fact that the invisible unpaid labor of wives and mothers truly is invisible to them is just another reason why these men don’t pass.
